5 Signs You're Buying a Quality Foreign Used Car in Nigeria
Buying a foreign used (“Tokunbo”) car in Nigeria can be one of the smartest financial decisions you make — or one of the most expensive mistakes, depending on what you’re looking for before you commit. Here are five things worth checking every time.
## 1. Check the Chassis and VIN Number
Every genuine foreign used vehicle has a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) that should match across the engine, chassis, and documentation. If any of these don’t line up, walk away — it’s a red flag for accident repair or a rebuilt title.
## 2. Inspect the Vehicle’s Condition
Carefully go over both the exterior and interior:
- Look for dents, rust, scratches, or signs of accident repairs
- Check that the doors, bonnet, and trunk close properly
- Inspect the seats, dashboard, air conditioning, lights, and electronic controls
- Listen for unusual engine knocking or rattling sounds
- Check for oil leaks or coolant leaks
- Examine the tires and suspension
## 3. Verify the Vehicle History
Ask the dealer for accident and maintenance history where available. A reputable dealership will never be evasive about a car’s past.
## 4. Take It for a Proper Test Drive
Drive at both low and high speeds if possible, on a straight road and around corners. Pay attention to braking, steering response, and unusual vibration.
## 5. Buy From a Dealer You Can Verify
Physical showroom, verifiable address, and real customer reviews matter more than a slightly lower price from an unknown seller. At Kendomon Motors, every vehicle in our inventory is available for a full physical inspection at our Abuja showroom before you commit.
